Dear Sisters and Mission Partners,
It is with great joy that we inform you that today Pope Francis authorized the Congregation for the Causes of Saints to promulgate the decree on the martyrdom of Antonia Luzmila Rivas in hatred of the faith (in odium fidei). Aguchita will be beatified! “Aguchita”, our sister in the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd, was murdered at the age of 70 by the Shining Path in La Florida, Peru, on September 27, 1990.
The decision was taken during an audience granted to Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.
The process of Aguchita's beatification began in 2017 and progressed very quickly. The signs of heroism were verified in the exercising of her virtues and in the surrendering of her life in martyrdom, witnessing to the commitment of her own life for others, faithful until death. The many details of the process with the Vatican, Province of Peru and its Commission, the local Bishop, and countless other people are all overseen by Dr. Waldery Hilgeman, Postulator, and Dr. Emanuele Spedicato, Assistant. From the beginning of the process, the Conference of Bishops of Peru have fully supported the Cause of Aguchita, particularly because she is a woman religious, and she is a native Peruvian. And, from the first request sent by the Province Leadership Team of Peru for the Cause, Sr. Ellen Kelly enthusiastically supported the process for its advancement.
This promulgation of Pope Francis on the beatification of our dear sister Aguchita is undoubtedly an extraordinary grace for all of us and for all the people of God.
We now await with joy Pope Francis' approval of the proposed date and place for the beatification ceremony, as well as the designation of his official representative. We will send you the invitation to join this great event. Until then, may Aguchita intercede for all the needs of our Congregation and God’s people.
United in the Heart of Jesus and Mary,
Congregational Leadership Team
