Campaign on the Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons
On September 27 and 28th the UN General Assembly and Member States will will review the Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons and issue a Political Declaration outlining the way forward in the fight against trafficking.
We are concerned that the trafficking of women and girls under Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Target 5.2 is falling under the radar for both Member States and the United Nations. For example, the recent High Level Political Forum reviewing SDG 5 made no reference to sex trafficking even though Target 5.2 specifically outlines the need to address the trafficking and sexual exploitation of women and girls.
Equality Now has launched a campaign to ensure that sex trafficking is addressed and prioritized as its own distinct form of human trafficking in the Political Declaration. We are calling for the 3 SDG targets that focus on trafficking, i.e. target 5.2 (on trafficking of women and girls for sexual exploitation), target 8.7 (forced labor and child labor) and 16.2 (all forms of trafficking in children) to be given equal priority. Together with the SDGs, the Plan will be a powerful tool to end the abuse and trauma of millions around the world.
As part of the campaign Equality Now has developed an action calling on the President of the General Assembly and the Chair of the Inter-agency Coordination Group Against Trafficking in Persons to ensure that SDG 5.2 is addressed in the Global Plan of Action. Additionally, there are shareable cards with facts and stories on the devastating impact trafficking has on women and girls around the world, as well as more information on the SDGs and the Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons.
