Formator’s Programme in Nairobi, Kenya - The challenge of Leadership - Final week
The Challenge of Leadership
We began our final week of the session with a module on the Challenge of Leadership facilitated by Lim Mung San, Principal Consultant of Connecting Tracks Consultancy, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Mung San presented to us five practices for effective leadership:
1. Model the way
2. Inspire a Shared Vision
3. Challenge the Process
4. Enable others to act
5. Encourage the Heart
We began to identify our core values and were encouraged to name them as we witness to them, modelling the way which we wish to inspire. Through writing a 2 minute vision speech and presenting it to the group we learned how to inspire a shared vision. Leadership we were reminded “is the art of mobilizing others to want to struggle for shared aspirations”

Through creative and enjoyable games we learned how to challenge the process, always seeking better and more effective ways of doing things, not for the sake of change but for the sake of the mission. We looked at how we can most effectively call forth the gifts of others, how to encouage one another on our common journey and how to exercise a flexible leadership style which is responsive to the needs of the group and the changing situations which we find ourselves in.

Finally we returned once again to our Unit Action Plans, integrating our learning from this module. They have now become more focused and we have become more confident in our ability to carry them out effectively when we return home.
